ANSR-17 Data
The external temperature data recorded during the
flight provided some interesting data to review. As is typical of
winter in the South-Western United States, we see a temperature inversion.
Normally, the temperature decreases steadily from the surface to the
tropopause. Once above the tropopause, it increases as sun light heats the payloads.
In this case, we see two distinct temperature inversions. The first
occurs at roughly 38,000' and is nearly 10° F. The second, smaller
inversion, occurs at 75,000' A temperature inversion is an array of
the atmosphere where the temperature increases as we rise in altitude,
rather than decreases.
During the ascent, the sensor experienced direct heating by the sun and is
12 - 18°F higher than the actual outside temperature. During the
descent phase, the temperature sensor was cooled to over -73°F by the wind
of the falling payload train.
