ANSR-25 Flight Summary

Launch 3 Sep 2005, 1524 UTC, (8:24 AM MST)

Payloads Payload Computer, Micro Beacon II, HF-APRS

Flight Notes

ARHAB (Amateur Radio High Altitude Ballooning Record) competition flight.  The portion of the contest we are attempting includes:

1. VHF/UHF Greatest Telemetry Distance (APRS on 445.950 MHz)
2. HF Greatest Telemetry Distance (PSK-31 on 14070.450 KHz) -
Record 1,719 miles with Steve, W8CSN.
3. Greatest 2-way QSO (Cross Band Voice Repeater)

Intermediate connection in antenna feed line coax caused very sporadic cross band repeater operation.  Limited operational usage.

Balloon didn't burst cleanly resulting in very chaotic descent.  Payload train appeared to tumble beyond 60° from vertical resulting in GPS lock loss.

Payload train separated during descent resulting in two separate landing sites.  The HF-APRS and Micro Beacon II free fell back to the ground.  Impact speed was nearly 70 MPH.  Using packet data send during the free fall, we were able to locate the payloads.  The HF-APRS internal power cable was disconnected and resulted in payload shutdown.  The payload was later tested and operation was nominal.  The Micro Beacon II continued to operate after impact, but only transmitted a carrier.  It was determined the Alinco radio was damaged during impact.  The internal controller and GPS were nominal.  All hardware will be retired from service because of concerns of possible high G impact damage.
